Evansville: An American World War II Heritage City

Evansville played an extraordinary role in the American home front during World War II. The city became a center of wartime production, manufacturing aircraft, landing ships, ammunition, and other materials critical to the Allied war effort. Thousands of Evansville residents contributed to the war effort through their work in local industries and organizations.

In 2024, Evansville was designated an American World War II Heritage City by the U.S. National Park Service, joining 26 other American cities recognized for their significant contributions to the nation's World War II history.

The new Clio tours help bring that history beyond the walls of museums and into the places where it happened.

A Community Collaboration

This project represents the work of the Evansville World War II Heritage City Group, a collaboration between:

  • Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science — Tom Lonnberg
  • LST 325 Memorial Ship and Museum — Chris Donahue
  • Evansville Wartime Museum — Dick Kuhn

The project was made possible through funding from a National Park Service grant, administered by The National WWII Museum in New Orleans.

We are grateful to everyone who helped bring these stories together and make Evansville’s World War II history more accessible to the community.
