Job Summary

Job Title: The George & Dorothy Eykamp Director of Science Experiences

Department: Curatorial Department - Science

  • The Director of Science experiences serves as a key member of the Curatorial team and must bring strong management experience, a track record of innovative projects, and a desire to create a distinctive experience in a dynamic museum environment.
  • In working with the Chief Curator, the Director of Science Experience is responsible for the Museum’s science programs and exhibitions, for recommending scientific artifacts for inclusion in the permanent collection and for the oversight of the Koch Immersive Theater and Family Place Gallery.
  • The Director of Science Experiences will oversee all facets of internal and external temporary science exhibitions and programs and has responsibility for the ongoing care of the hands-on science displays in the Family Place Gallery and daily operation of the Koch Immersive Theater. The Director of Science Experiences answers inquiries related to the scientific artifacts in the Museum’s collection and other science-related general inquiries.
Duties

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Working with the Curatorial department, the Director of Science Experiences is responsible for the creation of exhibitions and programs that reflect the Museum’s science collection or topics of science history or advancement in all branches of science and technology. This includes working with lenders, conducting research, designing and installing exhibitions and the production of all labels, signage, marketing materials, gallery guides and catalogues.
  • Relative to the Museum’s science collections, the Director of Science Experiences shall work with the Curatorial department shall select artifacts for internal and external exhibition and work with appropriate staff on all aspects of the collection’s management including research, display, storage, conservation, appraisal and insurance.
  • Serving as a contact for potential gifts, purchases or bequests for the science collection, the Director of Science Experiences shall work with donors and the Museum’s administration, development staff and Registrar through the acquisition process.
  • Maintain, plan and update movies and programs for the Koch Immersive Theater and oversee annual maintenance.
  • Work with the Executive Director as part of the development team to assist in the solicitation of gifts and ongoing stewardship of major donors.

Additional Duties

  • Oversee operation and maintenance of Museum’s hardware/software of electronic/digital systems (such as POS, digital signage, theater systems, door code access, telephone)
  • Oversee record-keeping for Cooperative Weather Observer program.
  • Works in collaboration with all departments of the Museum and assists the Executive Director as requested.
  • Assists with the planning and coordination of science-related tours and excursions.
  • Attends major events, programs and activities.

Supervisor Responsibilities

  • The Director of Science Experiences shall supervise science department specialists, interns, volunteers and contractors for science department projects.
Requirements

The minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required, though a master’s or advanced degree is preferred.

Evidence of continuing education, certification, and executive leadership training is desirable.

Internships

History Intern Program

This unique opportunity is designed to give university students an introduction to curatorial work at a mid-size, general museum. The intern will work directly with the Evansville Museum’s curator of history. Students will gain experience in the exhibition process, collection research, and related topics with an overall focus on local history. The successful candidate should be familiar with basic historic research techniques, be able to accomplish varied tasks, and have the ability to work both in a team setting and independently. Applications are accepted from students currently enrolled in college and majoring in history. These internships are popular and are often filled several semesters in advance.

This internship is non-paying and requires 150 hours for completion during the fall and spring semesters. Summer internships vary in the hours required and in availability. All internships are scheduled within a work week of Monday-Friday.

Friends Of The Evansville Museum

Friends of the Evansville Museum is one of Evansville’s premier cultural support organizations. This dynamic group provides financial support for the museum through a variety of fundraising programs and cultivates future museum leadership by nurturing the next generation of art collectors and community leaders.

Members enjoy a full calendar of exciting social and educational events, including Museum exhibitions, lectures, day trips and fundraisers. These activities promote awareness of the museum as well as a broader understanding of contemporary art and culture.

The Evansville Museum Docent Association

Our Museum Docents provide guided tours of the museum’s permanent collections, special exhibitions and planetarium shows for school children, church groups and other guests. These specially trained, volunteer museum ambassadors help visitors better understand and enjoy their visit.

Docents enjoy the privilege of getting the “first look” at most temporary exhibitions. Travel opportunities are also available, as the Docent Association plans one or two educational trips each year to various museums and galleries. Our Docents receive ongoing training for changing exhibitions and permanent collections.

At Evansville Museum, Docents lead children and adults on educational adventures designed to complement the classroom experience and bring the museum to life. Enthusiastic individuals who are willing to volunteer their time are always needed for our continuing efforts to enhance museum education.

The Evansville Museum Student Explainer Program

The Student Explainer program began during the summer of 1986 when one dozen high school students were selected to begin training in an effort to assist with work being done in the science galleries and the planetarium.

The program provides public service opportunities for are students in grades 7-12 to assist in providing public science demonstrations and to assist Museum staff in carrying out the mission of the Museum. Our program is modeled on the exhibit explainer concept in use for many years at the Exploratorium, a world-renowned science museum in San Francisco, California.

Student Explainers undergo an initial training period tofamiliarize themselves with the Museum’s operations and receive instruction on how to perform some pretty amazing science demonstrations. Volunteer hours take place on weekends and on weekdays during summer break. Interested individuals can apply to the program by completing a Registration Form.
