Active Stillness: Four Centuries of Still Life Art

At first glance a “still life” can be defined as a composition of inanimate objects. However, the storyline lies within the activity occurring outside the frame. An open door, a drawer slightly ajar, fabric folded over a table or even a carefully placed flower arrangement all hint to the same thing; the absence of the human presence. Who was there, where did they go, what were they doing, why did they leave the objects like that? Artists from the last four centuries and beyond have used different techniques, styles, and color palettes to get us to ask those same questions. Maybe the main character in the scene is you.
