The Virtual Museum: Online Science Exhibits

Recognition

To Do and Notice: Look at the two upside-down views of the oil on canvas painting Charles, 2nd Earl Grey, K.G. from the Museum Collection. Now look at the right-side-up views.

What Is Going On: Most people have difficulty recognizing faces when viewed upside-down. Astronauts, who spend a significant amount of time in space upside down, say that folks just don't look the same. These four images prove this.

The top image on the right may look strange, but the same image at the bottom looks even stranger. Notice how the eyes and mouth have been altered. Both altered images are the same, but because the top picture has been turned up-side-down, it's hard to recognize the alteration.
