At the Shipyard, the NAMOTH Social Club organized social activities. Created by the Employees War Production Committee of the Shipyard, NAMOTH planned picnics, musicals, parties and other events for employees.
In this image, a couple jitterbugs at the "Negro Picnic" held for African American workers at Stockwell's Woods in the summer of 1944. Evansville and the Shipyard reflected the prevailing social attitudes of the nation in the 1940s, and many activities inside and outside the workplace were segregated. The strong southern influence on Evansville and the great number of war workers who came from the South, also contributed to the long, unfortunate treatment of African Americans as second class citizens.
