
Originally awarded in the Navy for excellence in naval gunnery, during World War II the Army-Navy "E" Award was given to industries achieving excellence in production. It was announced on October 22, 1943 that the Evansville Shipyard was the recipient of this prestigious award. The official ceremony occurred on November 28 with 15,000 people in attendance. The featured speaker for the ceremony was Rear Admiral Clark Woodward, Chief of the Navy Incentive Board. Subsequently, the Shipyard received two renewals of the Army-Navy "E" Award. Nationwide only three percent of war industries received this award.
