In early 1944, there was a great urgency to produce more LSTs at shipyards across the country. The cross-channel invasion of Europe would occur within a few months and the war in the Pacific continued to expand. During this timeframe, the Evansville Shipyard produced an extraordinary number of LSTs. In May of 1944 alone, 11 ships were launched and 12 were commissioned. Evansville was earning its reputation as "World Champion Shipbuilders".
