As with many World War II industries across the country, women played a vital role in the construction of LSTs in Evansville. While women did hold more traditional service and clerical jobs at the Shipyard, many held jobs previously dominated by men such as welder, chipper, and painter. The peak employment for women at the Shipyard was 2920 in September of 1944. This represented over 16% of the workforce.
This photograph shows a group of women welders trained at the Mechanic Arts School, later North High School, in November of 1942.
