The power plants installed in LSTs in Evansville and at other shipyards were two 900 horsepower General Motors V-12 engines. Originally designed for use on railroad locomotives, they were converted for use aboard an LST. These engines provided a maximum speed of 10.8 knots or 11.5 miles-per-hour. At a somewhat reduced speed, the maximum range of an LST was 6000 miles.
