Outfitting Dock

Though the launching of an LST was an exciting and important occasion, much of the work to build these ships actually occurred after this moment. The Shipyard had four outfitting docks that were capable of handling two LSTs each. At these docks, over 6,300 items were added to an LST to complete its construction. This included much of the ship's electrical and mechanical gear. While LSTs initially spent up to three months at the outfitting docks, by the time the Shipyard reached peak efficiency the time was cut to two to three weeks.

In this image, LSTs 157 and 158, the Shipyard's first two ships, are being equipped at an outfitting dock.
