At the Evansville Shipyard, each ship had a sponsor who had the honor of christening the ship. Often the sponsor was a relative or friend of Navy personnel or of a Shipyard official. For every third ship launched, employees of the Shipyard were granted the opportunity to select the sponsor. The Employees War Production Committee organized this system.
