Efficient construction of LSTs and quick startup of the Evansville Shipyard was accomplished through the use many offsite subcontractors to build components of LSTs. Many large and small sections of LSTs were sent to the Shipyard for assembly onsite. This process rather resembled the construction of a large jigsaw puzzle.

Three major subcontractors for the Shipyard were Evansville based International Steel, George L. Mesker and Sons and George Koch Sons, Inc. In this image, workers at George Koch Sons are assembling parts for the ventilation systems of LSTs.
