This image of the Evansville Shipyard's forty-five acre site was taken from Reitz Hill on the City's West Side. The following factors contributed to the United States Bureau of Ships' selection of Evansville and this site for the construction of LSTs: the area's skilled labor force and established industries for subcontracting; a good record of management and labor cooperation; established transportation facilities; the proximity of the site to Evansville's downtown; and the safety of the site from flooding. Also, the LST had a draft (how far the ship sat in the water) of six feet and dams along the Ohio River kept its minimum stage at nine feet.
