Internship Opportunities Available Autumn 2008 SCIENCE INTERN PROGRAM This internship will acquaint students with the research and development conducted by at a general museum in the preparation for an original science exhibition to be displayed on the occasion of the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin. The Evansville Museum will mount this original exhibition to educate and excite visitors; explore the past, present and future of the natural world; and cultivate a deeper interest and understanding of science and the scientific process. You will work alongside the science staff of the leading local museum on tasks and responsibilities related to the creation of In the Light of Evolution: Two Centuries of Darwin to be displayed February 1 – April 12, 2009. The ideal applicant will bring to the internship an interest in science writing, research, design and exhibit building. The Science Intern would be a participant in weekly meetings with the Museum’s science staff. Frequent one-on-one meetings with the Director of the Science Center will communicate standard museum practices, issues and day-to-day responsibilities. The Museum’s science staff comprises a small institutional unit of a general museum of art, history and science where individual attention is highly valued. During the semester internship, the intern will have considerable flexibility to be engaged in aspects related to the exhibition that are of interest to the intern.

Most universities require 10 to 15 hours per week for an average of 2 to 3 credit hours. Hours for Interns will be scheduled Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. This internship is non-paying.
Internship Opportunities Available Year-Round REGISTRATION INTERN PROGRAM This is a unique opportunity for Studio Art majors for an educational practicum. There will be an application process for students and a set of guidelines that each student must meet before their application will be considered. The student should approach the appropriate department for an application (UE-Art Department; USI-Career Services Department). Then, the Registrar will interview each and make a final selection. The Agenda is as follows: 1. Orientation will include discussion covering Art Handling, Archival Materials, Packing, Inventory, Museum Procedures, and a Tour of the Museum. Interns will be given a manual that will be required reading before beginning work. 2. Working with the Registrar, Interns will help with Inventory. Going through the Collection writing down items and their location. Repackaging as necessary. 3. Working on the process of updating the Location Cards and compiling reports. 4. Working with the Curatorial Staff, Interns will assist with the Exhibition Preparation. They will learn about layout and design, installation procedures, and lighting. 5. Interns will become familiar with the proper procedures of completing Condition Reports, and compiling files on objects and artists. 6. Interns will be presented with corresponding literature and bibliography for collection management, registration documentation, and exhibition preparation during the course of the semester. 7. Interns evaluation will be based on accumulation of hours, care and concern for art and artifacts by the Registrar. The university faculty will be responsible for assessing the Intern and assigning a grade. As interns in the Registration Intern Program, they will gain valuable experience and practical skills. This program will be designed to educate students on the procedures of Museums through experience and reading. Upon finishing this practicum, the Art Majors will have a foundation for handling their own inventory of work or establishing a career in a museum or gallery.
