Evansville Astronomical Society

Celebrate ASTRONOMY DAY on Saturday, May 10 when a trip to the Museum will allow for encounters with cool telescopes, astronomical activities for all ages, and knowledgeable volunteers who will be on hand to help you observe, learn, discover, and explore the wonders of astronomy. Made possible by MICHELLE AND PHILIP EYKAMP, Astronomy Day was created by the Astronomical League, the world’s largest federation of amateur astronomical societies and individuals, and is being held in conjunction with the Evansville Astronomical Society.

Daytime activities will take place from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. and will include special planetarium shows; impressive views of the sun and the moon; and a special guest speaker. You’ll also have the opportunity to interact with local amateur astronomers; stroll through a scale model of the solar system; watch a comet being made and take home some really neat stuff.

 

UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME ASTRONOMER TO PRESENT ADVENTURES IN SCIENCE LECTURE

David Bennettx At 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, Dr. David Bennett from the University of Notre Dame Laboratory will present the 2008 Adventures in Science lecture, to be held in conjunction with Astronomy Day activities. The admission-free lecture will take place at 2 p.m.

David Bennett, Research Associate Professor of Astrophysics and Cosmology at the University of Notre Dame will present the 2008 Adventures in Science lecture, to be held in conjunction with Astronomy Day activities. The admission-free lecture will highlight Professor Bennett's research which is focused on gravitational microlensing by stars and planets in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies.

2:00 p.m. Adventures in Science Lecture by Dr. David Bennett "Detecting Extra-solar Planets as Blemishes in Einstein's Telescope"

STARWATCH IN MUSEUM PARKING LOT
After-dark the Museum in conjuction with the Evansville Astronomical Society, will host a starwatch. where personal celestial tours will begin at Dusk and continue through 9:30 p.m. This event is free and is provided by members of the Evansville Astronomical Society.

This event is subject to prevailing weather conditions and may be cancelled due to inclement weather.
